English 4- Literature
Circles
1st quarter was dedicated to examining The Epic (the genre, the form, the characters, etc.). At the end of 1st quarter, students started to apply this classic literature form to modern day stories in the Epic Hero Analysis paper. During 2nd quarter, we will be continuing this application as we examine contemporary literature pieces that exhibit some of the same qualities as the epics we have read.
This unit will also be a chance for students to take the reins of their learning and showcase their skills. Over the course of the next five weeks, students will be working in small groups to read and analyze one of 11 different contemporary novels. In these groups, they will determine their own reading schedule, as well as the way in which they would like to showcase their understanding of the text. Each group has identified standards that they wish to address and a plan to accomplish these goals. I am very excited to see what the students will create during this unit!
Since each group will be working at their own pace, the daily schedule (posted under the "English 4 Schedule" tab) will remain relatively unchanged throughout much of the quarter. This will provide an opportunity for me to work one on one with each group. Every day, students will be given a discussion question to analyze in their group, as well as time to work on their reading and assignments for the unit. November 18th and December 3rd are days that will be dedicated to a whole class discussion of the novels. Additionally, we will be covering composition errors every Wednesday in class.
