Course Descriptions


English 3A- An advanced, Junior English Course
English 3A will focus on studying the evolution of the American Dream through foundational American texts.  The course will examine the components of various documents, including pivotal historical documents, short stories, and the great American novel. This class will also incorporate an extensive study of academic writing with a focus on research and reflective writing. English 3 will include test preparation instruction and review for the state assessments. Grammar instruction at this point will expect mastery of the ten composition errors covered in English 1 and English 2.

English 4- A Senior English Course
English 4 will examine the influence of western literature on the American perspective.  This study will begin with an extensive look at the epic and the epic hero, moving then on to later texts that incorporate similar characteristics.  The course will also focus largely on developing technical reading and writing skills that will help students be successful in both career and college paths. The writing in this course will focus on developing basic writing and critical thinking skills, learning to support claims with evidence, and reflect on personal learning.   Grammar instruction at this point will focus on mastery of the ten composition errors.

 

English 4A- An advanced, Senior English Course 

English 4 will focus on answering the question, “Is the American dream uniquely American?” To answer this question, the course will engage in a comparative study of foundational American, British, and world literature.   Writing will be emphasized as a means of expressing students’ knowledge and learning.  This course will assume a college preparatory course, and thus emphasize reading and writing skills that reflect that path.  Grammar instruction will focus on mastery of the ten composition errors.  

 

AP Psychology- An Advanced Placement Introduction to Psychology Course

The AP Psychology course is designed to introduce students to the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and other animals. Students are exposed to the psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology. They also learn about the ethics and methods psychologists use in their science and practice. Students will be prepared to take the AP Psychology Exam upon completion of this course.

Reading Enhancement- A Course to Strengthen Reading and Literacy Skills

Reading Enhancement is a junior level course designed to improve the skills necessary to become a strong, academic reader. Students take Reading Enhancement in addition to English 3 or English 3A. The course works closely with the English 3 curriculum to enrich lessons, as well as adding lessons focused on vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, phonological awareness, and composition.
